The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
