The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
