The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
