New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
